Challenge

Lumio’s Content Library had grown organically over time with much of its material contributed directly by teachers, as shown to the left. While this underscored the strength of the community, the resulting collection was visually inconsistent, often outdated and lacked the polish expected from a leading edtech platform. The library risked overwhelming educators with unappealing resources at the very moment they needed clarity and inspiration. At the same time, gaps persisted in key areas, such as seasonal activities, visual organizers, and SEL content. The challenge was to elevate the design and breadth of the library while preserving a sense of authenticity that honored its teacher-driven roots.

Solution

I led the creation of Lumio’s unified style guide and developed a suite of adaptable templates that gave every resource a consistent, professional quality without losing the approachable, teacher-centered voice that defined the platform. Alongside redesigning existing materials, my team expanded the library with seasonal activities, visual organizers, and SEL resources tailored to teachers’ most pressing needs. By balancing polish with authenticity, the library became both a trusted instructional hub and a reflection of the vibrant educator community behind it. Since our team launch in 2021, the active Lumio customer base grew from approximately 5,000 to 45,000 teachers, a 900% increase.

APPLICATIONS

1,500 Educational Resources

Over a four-year span, I worked with a team of six Resource Developement Specialists who provided the content outlines for our Lumio educational resources. I provided graphic design for over 1,500 educational resources for the Lumio Content Library. I used extensive Midjourney Ai image generation, Shutterstock image assets and my own original graphics.

Digital Stickers

I concepted and designed a library of digital stickers for Lumio that gave teachers and students new ways to interact in lessons—whether celebrating achievements, adding playful visuals, or highlighting key content. The stickers became versatile tools for engagement, creativity, and classroom connection.

The Lumio stickers feature was launched on September 21st 2024. Within the next month users had embraced it to a level unanticipated by our product managers. Over 171,600 stickers had been added by teachers and students alike.

Incentivizing Adoption

To support teacher training and adoption, I designed Lumio’s digital badges. These badges incentivize educators to complete Lumio’s learning modules by offering accredited training hours toward their ongoing certification requirements. Beyond their practical value, the badges foster a sense of pride and accomplishment—creating a positive emotional connection between teachers and the Lumio platform itself.

Presentation Templates

Over a four-year span, I designed and developed more than 50 reusable presentation templates for Lumio. These templates established a consistent visual language for lessons and activities while giving educators flexible, easy-to-use design foundations. Today, they are used by over 45,000 teachers worldwide, supporting engaging, professional-quality classroom experiences at scale. Below are some of the templates available in-product. Others are reseved for the Lumio Library Content team.

Templates were built to support each stage of a classroom presentation, with dedicated layouts for titles, headers, content, features, quotes, backgrounds, and columns, among others. Because customization and flexibility were a priority for teachers, graphic elements were modular, moveable and deletable. By catering to teachers needs we struck a balance between variety, structure and creative control. A sample template is below.

Lumio Library Landing Page

While the organization of the landing page is owned by my former Project Manager, I concepted and designed the look of the resource covers, category buttons, graphic organizers, manipulatives, and content parner resource covers.  Different cover designs identify the resource’s target grade range as well as education companies who partner with Lumio as content suppliers.

CONCLUSION

Reflections & Acknowledgements

My work at SMART Technologies will endure as one of my proudest endeavours. It introduced me to the best version of a corporate work environment I can imagine.  It was an awesome experience for which I will be forever grateful.
